Class Name: Scrimshaw
Class Description:
Scrimshaw is an art form that consists of etching designs in polished surfaces and applying pigments into the designs. Scrimshaw is used for jewelry, knife handles, knickknacks, etc. Some drawing ability is helpful.
The class will learn about materials such as ivory, bone, shell, horn, tagua nuts, and man made materials, and how to prepare them. Also, tools used, pigments, and scrimming techniques will be taught.
All necessary materials, scrimming tools, pigments, and supplies will be provided. Unless you have perfect eyesight, students should bring an optivisor or magnifying glasses. Also, students are welcome to bring any old ivory, antlers, etc. that they may like to use, and any favorite scribing tool.

I have been active in our rock and gem club for the last 34 years. At my club, Western South Carolina Gem and Mineral, I have been president, vice president, and field trip chairman. I have taught scrimshaw at Wildacres a few times and been a past registrar with my wife. My interests include rock collecting, cabbing, faceting, silversmithing, wire wrapping, flint knapping, and scrimshaw.
