AUGUST 10-16, 2026 WILDACRES - WEEK 1
Judi Talley- CAPTURING THE BEAUTY OF NATURE IN METAL CLAY
Class Name: Capturing the Beauty of Nature in Metal Clay
Class Description:
This class will introduce the medium of metal clay and demonstrate how everyday items found in nature can be captured permanently in metal. All levels of metal clay experience are welcome, from beginner to expert. Plant materials will be gathered and used to create a selection of molds in silicone putties and polymer clay, and the molds will be used to create pieces in base metal clays (bronze and brass) from those molds. Personal carvings can also be produced and used to create additional metal clay items.
The volatile metals market means silver clay is not included in the cost of the class. If you have silver clay (any type), feel free to bring it. There will be silver clay available for purchase, but be aware that prices at the time of this writing (3/1/26) are running $5.80/gram with minimum-sized packs of 15-25 grams. Prices will be "market price" of the week before the class.
What is included:
Introductory packets of clay and appropriate embeddable findings for your chosen project
Materials for producing molds
Use of refining tools for sanding, filing, drilling, and finishing
An N95 face mask
Kiln time and polishing equipment
Use of instructor's tools, molds, and textures
Packet of useful resources and vendors
Additional items will be available for purchase, including wire, jewelry findings (i.e., earrings wires, jump rings, clutch pins, etc), additional clay.
You will need to bring:
any magnification you need for close work (Optivisor, readers, etc)
apron or other smock (base clay can stain clothes),
CLOSED TOE SHOES (seriously-it's a hot and risky business working with kilns and pointy tools)
Feel free to bring any tools or supplies you prefer to use. Experienced metal clay workers often have favorites...
Lab Fee: $120
Materials for purchase (clay, findings, some tools)
Prerequisites: None
