Electro Etching

with Micah Kirby

Class Description

Learn a design driven approach to Electro Etching. Gain knowledge using multiple masking techniques oil based marker, vinyl, P-n-P, as resists on metal. Acquire experience with two, non caustic and non gas producing electrolyte solutions salt and cupric nitrate.  Low voltage power supplies will be our power source to initiate etching.

Learning this technique can really open new doors in your jewelry making. Bringing pattern, texture and imagery into the work.

Copper and silver will be the main metals we use for this course (others can be used).

It is recommended to use the internet to find images that interest you. Find simple designs and be careful of trademarked images. I will have some designs available to use.

Class will involve Electro Etching using multiple masking techniques. From images in my existing inventory of vinyl masks, and Enamel based markers for the etching pattern.  We will learn the application, packaging/consumables (Tape ,Contact Paper, Aluminum Foil Etching solution)  and weeding (Vinyl Resist) of pattern on metal. Etching the pieces, doming, punching hole for bail or ear wires. No previous experience necessary

Lab Fee: $150 includes project kits( Metal Disc, Bails, Ear wires and Neck cords). The Fee covers material costs and student mess up. Copper, Brass will be our base metals. Silver will be available for an up charge
