Beginning, Intermediate, and Fused Chain-Maillé classes will be offered at the same time in August. Your projects will match your experience. Beginning and Intermediate class information is located below. Fused Chain-Maillé descriptions are located in the August Fused Chain-Maillé class. The fused class is open to all levels.
Beginning Chain-Maillé Jewelry
This class will provide the student with an introduction to one of the popular and fastest growing areas of jewelry making. Chain-Maillé Jewelry is based upon the protective armor worn by medieval knights. The old designs have been updated and used with precious metals to make beautiful chains, necklaces, bracelets, earrings, etc. These are easily made and do not require any soldering. Students will learn the proper way to open/close jump rings, basic patterns of linking the rings to form intricate chains, and finishing techniques to make the chains into wearable jewelry. The class will consist of a couple of pre-selected projects to teach the basic techniques followed by other projects which each student can individually select. Kits with pre-cut jump rings will be provided for the pre-selected projects. Students will also learn to cut their own jump rings. Wire to cut the jump rings for the remaining projects will be available or students can bring their own wire. Most projects will be done in Sterling Silver; but students can choose other metals.
Students should bring an Optivisor or other magnifying aid and 2 smooth jawed pliers. On average, students can expect to complete 5 or more projects.
Due to the current high prices for Silver & Gold, other metals such as Silver Filled copper & aluminum will be offered in addition to Silver and Gold-Filled.
A lab fee of $50 covers the 2 beginning kits, an extensive set of class notes and chain designs, and class consumables such as saw blades. Total cost of the class can range from $50 to $150 depending upon the student’s choice of projects.
Prerequisite – No experience necessary.
